FRED ASTAIRE, from the collection “Ampersand” by RJT
I’m too old for you, Audrey, and I would give you up gladly if I could. Because you’re too good by half, and if you don’t realize that, you should. Because everything’s coming back to the seams your funny face and my pointless schemes and the weight of the rain falling in our dreams. We’re like an ocean in search of a boat and I’ll be dancing with my overcoat. And I call out to you nightly but I do so quietly while you sleep and it’s so hard to to sleep so I lay and count my tears like sheep. And my voice grows coarse for the par I call for you and here you are and all the leaves all fall like stars, and I watch you catch them with your perfect hands. Are you an empress or an ampersand? So now I pray to your window the only light I now know just the same. And I will wait for you Audrey while your smiles befall like rain. Let me help you with your overcoat.
