SAFE, from the collection “Ampersand” by RJT

You grow like a brier patch through my veins and your voice sounds so softly like a marimba struck by rain. And your breath blows through my wind chimes. They sound like Pan’s flute you stand and a flag is raised, my blushing’s my salute. My olive skin it blisters as it twists up towards the sun. I’ve never been good at math but 1 times 1 is one. My heart’s got out the riot gear we’re going to bring the night to its knees. I’ll bust in the teeth of love to keep you safe from me. I’ve only got one matchbook to start a million fires. And we’ve only got one truth to tell, that’s why everyone’s a liar. It’s the passion, baby, no matter which way you fly your dove. Only the wisest king divine between being crucified and being loved. And our shadows stain the deepest at the dimming of the day, as the sun farts weakly across land, turning lovers gray. I gave a wino a ten dollar bill it was the happiest he;ll be, his job is to remember our faces and to keep you safe from me. Jack and Jill went up that hill, their plan up there was to sin. When Jack fell down, make no mistake, it was because Jill pushed him. And this boat of ours has got a clear-glass bottom, so we can see the sharks, and I’ve got these two hands. I can find you in the dark. I know your scent, you smell of flowers and oceans and luck, and in the thunder crack of our space, I swear that lightning struck. And I’ll go to hell, my belle, if you ain’t the prettiest I’ve seen, I’ll go to hell, I might as well to keep you safe from me.
