AZTEC GIRL from the collection “Ampersand” by RJT

Close your eyes and she’ll miss you, a kind of habit of bliss that you spread out like a spill. Tell it to your shrink tell it to the Incas, let her take you to the brink of knowing what you never will. Playing catch-up to join the hunts I say it on a t-shirt once it said love and kisses. She spreads the truth across her heart as you take aim with your darts as another mister misses. And we’re bringing down the temple for your aztec girl. The ground gives way but the air holds fast. This war you wage with weightlessness cannot last all you hope is junk. She takes the keys to the kingdom you’re no good to drive and while your love for her is still alive it’s as silent as a monk. You stay still but your heart is a hornet all that remains is an echo of an Eb cornet playing the Quixote blues, and all your gods have left you now, they never loved you anyhow. She’s here how about you?
